GDPR Glossary

Personal data controller

FORMAL ANSWER

A personal data controller is a natural or legal person, public authority, agency or other body which, alone or jointly with others, determines the purposes and means of the processing of personal data; where the purposes and means of such processing are determined by Union or Member State law, the controller or the specific criteria for its nomination may be provided for by Union or Member State law.

PRACTICAL ANSWER

A personal data controller is an entity that processes personal data for its own purposes. If we believe our data are processed improperly or are out of date, we have the right to have them updated or to request that processing cease. Under the GDPR, a controller does not include a person who processes data for purely personal or household activities, e.g. a colleague to whom we gave our phone number or email address, or an aunt to whom we send a registered letter every year on her birthday.
